Bonding is a dental technique that allows a dentist to bond tooth colored material onto the flat surfaces of a tooth. This bonded tooth colored material can be used to reshape a tooth, give it a more natural color, and to cover up unwanted stains. In other words, dental bonding can be used to:
Many dental bonding procedures can be done without anaesthesia so there is often no need to give a dental injection when using bonding.
Bonding was invented in the late 1970s and involves etching a tooth with phosphoric acid to create microscopic pores all over the etched surfaces. A liquid plastic is then brushing into these pores and the plastic is made to harden using a dental curing light. Regular dental composite materials can now permanently bond onto this plastic surface.
Bonding is truly a modern dental miracle because prior to the invention of dental bonding, holes had to be drilled into a patient's tooth to hold a filling placed over the surface of a tooth. Worse yet, prior to dental bonding the only way to change the surface of a patient's tooth was to grind most of a tooth away to construct a dental crown.
