Years ago dentists numbed their patients with reusable dental needles. After each patient, the dental needle would be cleaned, sterilized and used again over and over. This created a lot of problems. Can you imagine using a razor over and over again for two years? By the end of the two years that razor wouldn't feel very good.
Because dental needles used to be reused, they had to be pretty big so they could be easily cleaned. Unfortunately, a large dental needle hurts more. So our parents and grandparents really had to go through a lot of pain to have their teeth fixed up.
With modern dentistry we use one time disposable dental needles that are very sharp and very thin. Have you ever been cut by something sharp and later found out about it by seeing the blood? Because of this, these sharp disposable dental needles don't hurt very much.
Since modern dental needles are disposable, there is no chance that a dental patient can get an infection from someone else. The dental needle is only used on you and then thrown away.
In addition to improving dental needles, there are now lots and lots of different choices of dental anaesthetics for a dentist to use to numb a patient. Years ago there was only Novocaine. Today we have dozens of other very effective dental anaesthetics.
The improvements in dental needles and dental anaesthetics has made visiting the dentist a much better experience than years ago.
