Loose teeth are a sign that there is something seriously wrong because teeth are supposed to be firmly embedded in their supporting bone. Loose teeth are caused for several reasons but regardless of the reason, it must be treated to prevent further problems
The most common reason for loose teeth is due to the loss of supporting bone from periodontal disease. As the bone melts away the loose teeth are no longer held in the bone. If the teeth are so loose that they are bothering a patient, the loose teeth can be bonded together to prevent this movement. It is very important to prevent further bone loss and the first first step is scaling and root planing. After this, the tissue and bone are reevaluated.
Another reason for loose teeth is due to an accident and trauma. It is extremely important to visit a dentist immediately after an accident. Very often the dentist can reposition the teeth into their original positions and hold them in place using bonding.
Not treating loose teeth can accelerate the bone loss around the teeth and rapid tooth loss. The movement of the teeth is not natural and the supporting jaw bone is not designed to handle this movement.
