baby bottle mouth

Baby bottle mouth is when a baby develops severe cavities in most of her teeth. It's sometimes called baby bottle tooth decay.

It is difficult, especially for new parents, to cope with a constantly crying baby. It is even worse when it's late at night and the child will not stop crying. Many parents solve this problem by giving their babies bottles filled with sugar water, formula, or milk. The baby can't cry with a bottle in it's mouth so this usually works.

Unfortunately, if you bath the teeth in sugar or with liquids that contain sugars, it causes cavities. The result is that the baby develops a bombed out mouth and this is called Baby Bottle Mouth. All the teeth severely rot away. Baby Bottle Mouth is often not discovered until the baby is two years old when the child makes its first visit to the dentist.

Natural foods contain sugars that can be harmful when used to constantly bath a baby's teeth. Fruit juices ( apple, grape, orange, etc ), punches, milk and formula should be avoided between normal feedings. The tooth destruction with baby bottle mouth is often so bad that the baby's dental work has to be done in a hospital while the child is sedated or placed under general anaesthesia.

Baby bottle mouth can be prevented by giving your baby a bottle of water without anything else in it or just an empty bottle to suck on.
