dental bridges

Dental bridges replace missing teeth. After a tooth is removed the rest of the teeth can move and shift out of place and these dental restorations help prevent this. Traditional bridges are called fixed because they're cemented into place and not removable. They usually cover two teeth, one tooth in front and one tooth behind the missing tooth. For their construction, two teeth are prepared by reducing them in miniature and dental crowns are made to cover each of the two teeth. The teeth that hold the bridge are called abutment teeth. A false crown, called a pontic, is next permanently attached to the two crowns.

Instead of constructing dental bridges, you might consider using dental implants to replace the missing teeth. This is a good idea if the teeth next to the missing teeth are virgin teeth and if there is adequate bone for implants to fit in. This case avoids cutting down two or more natural teeth. Implant Dentistry has evolved and improved over the past two decades and is now considered part of mainstream dental care.

Dental bridges are usually made out of metal or a combination of metal and porcelain. The metal can be carefully covered so that it looks natural and as if you were never missing a tooth. Well planned restorations should be cosmetically pleasing and usually last about ten years but most insurance companies will pay for a new one every five years. With good oral hygiene they can last for decades. It makes sense to take great care of your own teeth and any dental work that you have invested in.
