Dental pain is nature's way of telling you there's a problem. You should see a dentist immediately because you might have a dental infection. If a dental infection is left untreated, it can cause facial swelling and the need for a hospital stay. In most cases, patients are placed on pain reducing narcotics and antibiotic medications.
Even if the dental pain is not life threatening, delay in visiting a dentist may allow the tooth decay to grow and to kill your tooth. The result is a root canal, core build up, dental crown and a big dental bill! Many people first attempt to deal with their problem using a home remedy for a toothache and in minor cases it works. However, the underlying problem is still there; there's something wrong and you should take care of it.
There are several different causes for dental pain. Early tooth decay usually causes temporary tooth sensitivity which goes right away. Tooth grinding can also cause this sensitivity. If the pain lingers, the decay is probably killing your tooth and the tooth will need a root canal or dental extraction. Sinus problems can cause the upper back molar teeth to hurt even though there's nothing wrong with them. A panoramic x-ray can show an impacted sinus above the tooth roots.
