Dental Sealants

dental sealants

Dental sealants go on top of teeth and seal out decay. The tops of teeth have small grooves and pits which collect food and can cause cavities. Dental sealants fill these grooves and pits with a plastic material so cavities can't form. Dental sealants can be placed into teeth at any age, but it is most common to place dental sealants in kid's teeth.

The procedure for placing dental sealants is quick and easy and best of all, it does not require anaesthesia. The tops of the teeth are cleaned and etched with acid. A liquid plastic is next painted into the pits and fissures of the teeth and the plastic is hardened. The etching allows the plastic to stick to the surface of the teeth. The result is that food can not get trapped in the top of the teeth and not cavities can form.

Dental sealants are cheap compared to regular dental fillings and dental sealants prevent tooth decay. Because they are so easy to place, they should be considered for use with most kids, especially when their permanent teeth begin coming out.

Dental sealants are also called tooth sealants and pit and fissure sealants.
