Dentist

This information is provided by Dr. Mark Allan Padolsky and the Atlanta Dental Group, P.C. to assist you in better understanding your dentist. Dr. Padolsky has been a dentist since 1982 and really enjoys being a dentist and helping patients. As a dentist, he creates beautiful smiles, helps people enjoy their food and assists patients in living longer by assisting them in achieving excellent dental health.

Everyone at some time in their life needs the help of a dentist. Finding a dentist can often be difficult because a dentist can refer to himself in many different and confusing ways. Hopefully, this information will help you understand more about your dentist.

General Dentist

The word general before dentist means that this dentist can do most dental procedures and does not specialize in one part of Dentistry. However, a general dentist may refer some dental patients to other dentists who specialize in a procedure. Many general dentists feel uncomfortable treating children and refer kids to a children's dentist, also called a pediatric dentist.

If your dentist considers himself a general dentist, he may belong to the American Academy of General Dentistry.

Family Dentist

A Family Dentist is comfortable treating everyone in a family, including children. The family dentist, like the General Dentist, provides most dental services to his patients. The Family Dentist will often refer some of his patients to a dentist who specializes in a special area of dentistry.

Emergency Dentist

Not every dentist takes emergency patients. A successful dentist often has a full appointment book for several weeks and seeing an emergency dental patient can interfere with the time this dentist promised to regular patients.

The Emergency Dentist is familiar with and comfortable doing emergency dental procedures. This dentist takes great pleasure helping emergency patients get rid of their pain and he often believes treating emergency dental patients is an important responsibility.

Cosmetic Dentist

A Cosmetic Dentist emphasizes the cosmetic effects of every dental procedure he does. A Cosmetic dentist will tend to use white fillings rather than silver and porcelain crowns rather than gold. The goal of a Cosmetic dentist is creating a beautiful natural looking smile. Many cosmetic dentists belong to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Implant Dentist

An Implant Dentist is experienced in surgically placing dental implants into his patients mouth. Many implant dentists also construct the crowns and bridges that go on top of their dental implants. An Implant Dentist does not necessarily have to have had additional dental school training.

TMJ Dentist

A TMJ dentist enjoys caring for patients with dentally related headaches. A TMJ dentist is often familiar with the medically related problems that complicate many TMJ patient care. A dentist with TMJ training is becoming more and more rare because insurance companies do not like paying for TMJ services. When a dentist has difficulty getting paid for a dental service, even if it's needed, that dentist often has to look for other things to do.

ADA Dentist

The American Dental Association is the largest organization of dentists in the United States. It is a good chance that your dentist will belong to the ADA. The ADA has a strict code of ethics and is dedicated to serving patients. Many dentists are proud to themselves as a ADA dentist.

Specialist Dentist

A dentist can limit his practice to only one part of Dentistry. Some dentists choose to return to dental school after completing their studies to become a dentist. This training focuses on one area of Dentistry so that this dentist becomes very proficient in one area of Dentistry.

Dentist Training

A dentist in the United States receives more training and education that any other dentist in the world. A US dentist receives eight years of dental training after high school, four years in college and four years in dental school. Before becoming a practicing dentist, a dental student must first pass both of the US National Dental Boards ( I & II ) and graduate from the school that trains dentists. Even when a dentist graduates from an accredited dental school, all states require a dentist to be licensed in their state before practicing Dentistry.

Unfortunately, not many college students want to become a dentist and this is creating a shortage of dentists. Being a dentist can be stressful because the patients that a dentist treats are often stressed when they come to the dentist's office. A good dentist has to learn to understand his patients and relieve and reduce their nervousness. A dentist has many ways to reduce the dental fears of his patients.
