          The word general before dentist means that this dentist can do most dental procedures and does not specialize in one part of Dentistry. However, a general dentist may refer some dental patients to other dentists who specialize in a procedure. Many general dentists feel uncomfortable treating children and refer kids to a children's dentist, also called a pediatric dentist.

A US dentist receives eight years of dental training after high school, four years in college and four years in dental school. Before becoming a practicing dentist, a dental student must first pass both of the US National Dental Boards ( I & II ) and graduate from the school that trains dentists. Even when a dentist graduates from an accredited dental school, all states require a dentist to be licensed in their state before practicing Dentistry.

          Unfortunately, not many college students want to become a dentist and this is creating a shortage of dentists. Being a dentist can be stressful because the patients that a dentist treats are often stressed when they come to the dentist's office. A good dentist has to learn to understand his patients and relieve and reduce their nervousness. A dentist has many ways to reduce the dental fears of his patients.
