Gold Crown

gold crown

Many people over the age of 50 who have had dental work done will have a gold crown. Today they are used very rarely because people prefer a more natural look and porcelain and composites have become the norm. But gold does not break easily, instead it wears over time allowing it to gradually fit in the mouth. Porcelain crowns tend to break suddenly with heavy biting. Gold is also hypo-allergenic, a factor that has become important to many people after a Canadian girl died being exposed to latent traces of peanut butter.

Statistically, a gold crown lasts almost twice as long as a porcelain dental crown. Anybody who has had a porcelain crown suddenly break on them can tell you that the longer it takes before this happens the better. This also makes it a good long term investment, and since so much money can be spent on dental work it is oftena good idea to think of it this way. Gold was once, and to a lesser degree still is, highly cherished by humanity, since ancient times. It has only been recently with the quest for eternal youth that the use of this metal has fallen out of favor.

Porcelain crowns require a great deal of time and expertise to make, whereas a gold crown is much simpler to create. Since porcealin dental crowns need a supporting metal understructure, two dental technicians are needed to make just the one porcelain crown, increasing cost of production. A gold crown is often quickly constructed by one dental technician rather than two. This decreases the labor costs and often more than compensates for the increased cost of gold so that the dental crown cost is not any higher.

A gold crown has many advantages, especially after root canal therapy.
