Impacted Teeth

impacted teeth

Impacted teeth are inside the jaw bone or gums. Because they are not easily accessible, they are difficult to remove and not all dentists are comfortable removing them for this reason. There is controversy as to whether an impacted wisdom tooth can move all the teeth in front of it. Some dentists believe that a wisdom tooth is the reason for crowding of the teeth in the front of the mouth where you smile. Many orthodontists insist upon their removal to be sure that their patients keep their nice smile. It seems like a good idea to remove impacted teeth whenever there is concerned about the stability of your smile.

The Atlanta Dental Group PC services include the removal of impacted teeth in addition to most routine oral surgery procedures. Most procedures take less than a half hour and can be completed using local anaesthesia. This avoids the additional expense and risk of general anaesthesia. Our dentists recommend that patients remove impacted teeth one side at a time. This allows a patient to chew on the other side. The patient heals quicker and feels better during the recovery period after the removal if this is done. Most patients that have impacted teeth removed on Thursday are back at work on Monday.

With local anaesthesia a patient having impacted teeth removed does not need someone else to come to the impacted teeth surgery visit because the patient was not drugged. Our oral surgery philosophy is to reduce the amount of trauma to a minimum. This is accomplished by reducing the incisions used to expose teeth to the smallest length possible. Because much of the blood going to the bone around impacted teeth is supplied by the gums, we do not pull much of the gums off the bone. This reduces swelling and assists healing.

If you are interested in having your impacted teeth removed and would like to speak with Dr. Padolsky, please make a consultation appointment by calling  404-874-7428.  A panoramic x-ray should be taken at this visit to see how your impacted teeth are positioned.
