An open bite is when teeth do not touch. This doesn't occur naturally because teeth constantly erupt during their lifetime. It can occur in the front of the mouth and affect the patient's smile. This is called an anterior open bite. It can happen laterally and separate the side teeth and finally, it can happen in the back of the mouth on one or both sides.
In most cases, a tongue thrust causes an open bite. The tongue is strong and when it gets between the teeth, this muscle pushes the teeth back into their sockets. The result is that the teeth do not touch even when the rest of the teeth close. Thumb sucking can also be the cause. Additionally, thumb sucking stretchs and distorts the upper jaw forward. Oral habits such as placing a pencil in the mouth can create a gap.
Most dentists know that an open bite is difficult to correct because after orthodontic treatment, the tongue or thumb push the teeth back. It is very important to diagnose the cause before therapy begins. Many patients have TMJ Dysfunction and the tongue is trying to separate the teeth and move the jaw joints into a comfortable position.
This bad bite removes several teeth from normal function and makes it harder on the rest of the teeth by forcing them to work harder.
