Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are exactly what the name implies, a set of dentures made only to replace a few missing teeth. Other alternatives to this method include, dental implants and a dental bridges. Different situations call for different techniques and it is best to consult with your dentist as to which method will be best for your unique situation. If you do get a partial there are a number of things you should know before getting it and for maintaining it.
Partial dentures can be a good idea if you recently lost a few teeth and are feeling self-conscious. It is important to have something done as soon as you can after losing your teeth. You may have noticed an awkward feeling when you are talking or especially eating. This problem could become worse over time, as it is important to have a tooth opposing each other tooth. Over time a tooth opposite an empty space could become loose and work its way out. Wearing a denture, especially a partial, can be a little awkward for the first few weeks but that is completely normal.
Partial
dentures are traditionally made using
metal fasteners. Small holes are drilled into surrounding teeth
and the partial uses these holes as anchors for the false
teeth. New advances in the field of dentistry have allowed
for invisible partials, that dont use unsightly metal. A
partial is removable just like normal dentures and should always
be worn during waking hours. It is important to clean dentures
and partials should be maintained just as normal dentures. A dentures reline will still
be needed for partials and while it may be tempting to do this
yourself, this could serious problems. Tell your dentist if the
denture isnt fitting as well as it once was.
