When people talk about TMJ, they really mean TMJ Syndrome. The abbreviation stands for TemporoMandibular Joint which is the scientific name for a jaw joint. The problem with TMJ disorder is that few people really understand it and most dentists have little experience treating it. If you are afflicted with a TMJ problem, it may be best to spend some time finding a TMJ dentist who is experienced and knowledgeable in this area of Dentistry. It's also important that you learn as much as you can about your problem.

TMJ can cause serious problems like TMJ migraines, neck pain, jaw pain and problems with sleeping. It's often associated with Mitral Valve Prolapse, decreased thyroid function, nasal allergies, hypoglycemia, vitamin deficiencies and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Each of these additional problems must also be treated of TMJ treatment may not be successful. While these may seem like abstract concepts that don't affect you, the truth is that they can be almost debilitating. What adds to the problems is that many insurance companies refuse to pay for TMJ therapy. This is very frustrating because it makes caring for these patients very difficult!

What is even more unfortunate is that TMJ is often not cured, it's just treated and managed until each TMJ symptom is no longer a factor. Unfortunately they can always come up again. Treatment generally begins by treating the muscle pain using a removable TMJ appliance and a TMJ program aimed at reducing muscle pain. The program was developed by Dr. Mark Padolsky and most patients experience relief within 6 weeks. In some case, the lower jaw is repositioned into place that is more aligned with the jaw joints.
