The TMJ appliance used at the Atlanta Dental Group PC is a soft lower appliance worn 24/7. It's made of 0.150 thermoplastic material molded to a custom model constructed from an impression of the lower teeth. In our experience, most patients primarily suffer with muscle pain in the body's attempt to support badly positioned jaw joints. Most patients experience TMJ relief within one to six weeks of treatment.

        The soft TMJ appliance is designed to take the pressure off of the temporomandibular joints and relieve the jaw muscles. Most patients that grind their teeth get worse with hard plastic appliances and have more headaches and pain.We avoid hard materials because of this problem. Hard materials tend to naturally trigger the biting and grinding reflexes.

       Wearing the soft TMJ appliance only at night does not work. Wear must be combined with Dr. Padolsky's six week program. The program addresses many of the medical and nutritional factors that make TMJ worse and which many TMJ patients have. Patients must understand that there are many interacting problems such as allergies, thyroid problems, mitral valve prolapse, nasal obstruction, forward head posture and much more, involved with TMJ difficulties.
