There is no good TMJ medication. If you break your leg and your leg bone is fractured in two or three pieces, no medicine can help put it back into place! If one or both of your jaw joints are in the wrong positions, no medicine is going to reposition the joints.
Unfortunately, many health care professionals do not understand temporomandibular joint dysfunction and they prescribe a TMJ medication instead of treating the real problem, the mismatch of the bite and joints. Some of the prescriptions do not make any sense at all. If a muscle is overworked, stress, shortened and so tight that it can't let any blood into it, how can a muscle relaxant get into the muscle. Muscle relaxers usually don't work very well because of this muscle spasm.
Treating the pain with a TMJ medication only treats the symptoms and not the cause. Some patients have constant pain because the do not have appliances that are correctly constructed for them. So they take Vicodin and become addicted to this prescription narcotic just like drug addicts become addicted to their illegal drugs. The temporomandibular joint dysfunctions symptoms then continue because the source of the problem was not addressed.
