tongue biting

Tongue biting is not a good thing. Some people have the nervous habit of biting their tongue or cheek and this is a bad habit. Sometimes you can bite your tongue pretty badly when you or eating or talking, especially if you are trying to do both at the same time. This is a particularly bad habit, not to mention bad manners, that can cause you to bite your tongue too frequently. Often these little bites are nothing more than a minor annoyance, but they can be severe and even the little ones can be a problem if it happens too frequently.

If you are having a problem with tongue biting you should see a dentist. This can be caused by any number of things. If you have dentures it is possible that these are the likely cause. Ill-fitting dentures can become loose and their movement in the mouth can make it difficult not to bite you tongue. A dentures reline is the generally the best solution for this problem. A quick reline can be done, or a more thorough one that takes longer. Other options include new dentures like soft dentures or implant dentures, to prevent the movement.

Tongue biting at night can be the symptom of a more serious problem. Though cases are rare it is a symptom of epileptic seizures at night. Again, this is rare, but if you are experiencing these symptoms you should see a doctor immediately. Tongue bites should also be seen by a dentist if they do not stop bleeding within about ten minutes. For minor tongue bites an antiseptic mouthwash or even cold water can help provide relief from the pain. Pain relievers are another option if the pain does not seem to go away quickly but if you stop thinking about it the pain generally fades quickly.
