Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening liquid soaks into teeth and dissolves everything that's not tooth enamel. The result is that the tooth is left with its natural white color. Teeth are made of salt crystals which are naturally white. The yellow comes from stuff stuck inside the crystal. This organic material enters as a tooth develops, from injuries and from food staining. Regardless of the way the color changed, most discoloration is from organic material which can be dissolved away with a tooth whitening gel.

Prior to tooth whitening, a comprehensive examination is done, the first step is to insure that nothing is wrong with the teeth. Impressions are taken of the teeth and tooth whitening trays are made that precisely cover the teeth. The dentist checks the fit and gives detailed tray whitening instructions on the use the whitening materials. The precision of the fit is the most important factor in success. A precision fit forces the tooth bleaching gel into the teeth so that an even change in color is obtained.

A small amount of the tooth whitening gel is placed into the covers and the patient wears them for 4 hours per day for two days. If there are no problems, they are worn while sleeping for 1 week. The tooth whitening treatment is safe and usually results in a nice smile. Many patients want to have it done but are too embarrassed to ask. However, white teeth benefit everyone. Your white beautiful smile will please many people and perhaps help make you feel more comfortable in situations you might previously have been concerned about.

Tooth whitening is not permanent. Teeth can stain, especially if you drink coffee (coffee smile). However, the tooth bleaching tray can be used again if you want to freshen up the color.  The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being.
