toothache

Toothache can be caused by a number of different things. A dental cavity, a cracked tooth, a fractured tooth, an exposed tooth root, a dental abscess, tooth grinding and food trapped under the gums are all painful. Sometimes the toothache pain felt in a tooth really comes from somewhere else in the body. This is called referred pain. Pain can be referred from angina, sinus toothache, TMJ, trigeminal neuralgia, earaches and some cancers. So it's important to have a dentist evaluate you.

Pain that lasts more than a minute, wakes you up at night or that continuously throbs is from a dental abscess and dead tooth. The toothache treatment necessary in this case is usually a root canal or dental extraction. Dental pain that comes and goes or that is triggered by hot and cold is often from a deep dental cavity. The nerve is inflamed. Very often a sedative temporary filling or protective permanent restoration will provide enough protection to provide toothache relief if sweets cause the pain.

A cracked tooth causes a toothache that only hurts when you bite on the tooth. The crack can go partially or all the way through the dental crown and/or root. If you had a dental filling done recently, it may be that it's high and the biting trauma is causing the discomfort. Tooth grinding beats up on teeth and often causes hot and cold sensitivity and pain. Teeth are not designed to flex and when they do, they hurt.
