After Tooth Extraction

after tooth extraction

After tooth extraction a patient should rest, relax and eat well. Because of modern anaesthetics, many patients do not feel very much during their oral surgery procedures. They then think that it was no big deal and proceed to go out and raise hell. Of course, this runs them down and they have tooth extraction pain and a dental problem. An extraction is a serious thing and should be taken seriously.

You have to eat well after tooth extraction because your body needs new materials to build the jaw bone and gums back. You should eat good stuff. There's very little calories in chicken soup and in most soups, but many patients limit their diets to soup after their surgery. There's nothing in soup! It's great when you have a fever and can't keep anything down but it stinks for dental healing.

You can rinse with warm ( not hot ) salted water twenty four hours after tooth extraction surgery. This gently cleans the healing area without disturbing the blood clot. Place a teaspoon of table salt in an 8 ounce glass of water and microwave the mixture for about a half a minute. The water should be warm to the touch and not boiling hot. For good healing, the clot needs to stay in place for a few days. If you disturb it, the area will begin bleeding again and will never heal properly. It's like picking at a scab, so leave the healing site alone.

The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being. You are welcome to join our family of patients. They always prescribe antibiotics to prevent a dental infection and a narcotic pain medication to help reduce a patient's discomfort after tooth extraction. It is especially important to take the antibiotic since a surgically wounded area is more likely to get infected than an undisturbed area of the mouth. Dr. Mark Allan Padolsky is a dentist in Atlanta who practices with the group.
