An all porcelain dental crown is probably the closest thing to a natural tooth that you can get. Since there's no metal underneath the ceramic material, the restoration allows light to get into the tooth, go through the tooth and bounce off the tooth much like real tooth enamel. This makes the restoration look real. New research has added several additional types of porcelains that have more strength than the older porcelains.
An all porcelain dental crown requires special cements since the color of the cement can show through the ceramic. If the cement is too dark, it causes the restoration to look dark. A light cement can cause white spots underneath the crown. Since ceramic materials can crack easily, restorations using this material must be thick enough to resist biting forces.
New techniques have also influenced the construction of an all porcelain dental crown. Years ago, the ceramic powder was layered on the mold and then baked. Shrinkage problems almost always pulled the hardened material away from the mold so that it would not fit well. New pressable ceramic materials allow the porcelain to be pressed onto the mold.
