Dentures

Dentures are artificial teeth replacing all of the upper or lower teeth. They’re removable and come in and out of the mouth. They are made of plastic teeth with a gum colored plastic base. If made properly, they fit the gums underneath well. There are several dental appointments needed. The first involves an impression to make an exact copy of the patient’s mouth. The second requires jaw relations which create a record of how the jaws fit together. When the teeth are returned from the laboratory in set up in wax, the third visit involves a try in of the tooth set up to evaluate how they look and fit. When the tooth set up is approved, the wax set up is sent back to the lab to be processed. The patient then returns for the fourth visit, the delivery – where the final denture is adjusted and fitted in the patient’s mouth. Future visits are called adjustments.

Patients with dentures still have to see a dentist regularly since every prosthesis needs a dentures reline. When they wear down a patient’s face starts looking like there’s nothing in the mouth (over-closed). The teeth should show when a patient smiles. When too much gum color shows, the patient’s smile looks gummy.

There are alternatives. Dental implants have advanced over the past decade and in most cases can be placed into the jaw bone to replace missing teeth with fixed bridgework much like original teeth. Implant dentures can often avoid many of the aggravating problems that traditional complete dentures sometimes have.
