TMJD Program

There is no easy “magic bullet” cure for TMJ Dysfunction. This is an unfortunate truth that many people suffering from TMJD have difficulty accepting. TMJ surgery often makes the problem worse. A TMJD program that addresses the source of TMJ pain as well as the cause of TMJD for each individual patient can make a dramatic difference in a person’s life. Unfortunately, many people want quick fixes and are unwilling or unable to adhere to a program of treatment.

Dr. Padolsky is our senior TMJ dentist here at the Atlanta Dental Group PC. He has developed a TMJD program that takes 6 weeks. While many patient may feel that this takes too long it is important to remember that the is no quick fix for TMJ Dysfunction. The TMJ joints are the most complex joints in the human body and their position means they can cause a wide variety of symptoms that affect the entire body. There are also multiple different causes of TMJD and correctly determining what the cause is for each patient is vital to correctly treating them.

The first step in Dr. Padolsky’s TMJD program is eliminating TMJ pain. The most common source of pain from TMJD is muscle spasms caused by the muscles trying to correct the bite. To remedy this a TMJ mouth guard is custom made. This must be worn as prescribed in order for it to work. Once the pain is eliminated the cause of TMJD can be treated. As this is often different for each patient it is important to get a thorough dental examination and diagnosis. A cookie cutter treatment program will fail a fair number of patients and so it must be custom tailored for each individual patient. TMJ massage and TMJ exercises are a key part of treatment in reducing pain and correcting the movement of the jaw.

Dr. Padolsky is a TMJD doctor who has been interested in treating TMJD since he was in dental school at Emory University over 26 years ago. Since then he has taken numerous continuing education courses in TMJD. In 1990 he earned a Fellowship in the Atlanta Craniomandibular Society, which, specialized in the multi-disciplinary study iof TMJD. In 2000 Dr. Padolsky earned another Fellowship, this time with the American Orthodontic Society. He later earned an achievement award for his participation in continuing education courses. He has developed this TMJD program with the knowledge gained from these courses as well as his own study into TMJ Dysfunction.
