Tooth Extractions
A tooth extraction gently removes a tooth from its dental tooth socket. The word extraction comes from ex- meaning out or away and trahere, to pull. It’s important to allow the numbness to sink in fully beforre attempting to remove the tooth. The dentist checks the depth of the anesthesia by making a small incision around the tooth using a surgical scalpel. Once it’s confirmed that the patient is completely numb, the gum incision is lengthened and the gum tissue is gently pulled away from the tooth that is requiring removal. If any of the surrounding dental bone is in the way, the bone is then removed.
If needed, the tooth is sectioned into pieces which are then removed. Finally, stitches ( sutures ) are placed so the gum lays back into place. The more gentle the removal procedure, the better the possiblility of avoiding a tooth extraction dry socket.
A molar tooth extraction may be necessary due to extensive tooth decay, crown or root fracture, or due to severe periodontal disease. Second molars are occasionally removed for orthodontic purposes but new orthodontic techniques are available to avoid second molar extraction. The most common extraction is the wisdom or third molar extraction. Most people do not have the room in their mouths to allow their wisdom teeth to properly fit inside the dental arch. The most common tooth requiring removal is the wisdom tooth and is a very common dental procedure performed for teenagers in the final years of high school studies.
Most tooth extraction procedures go well, take less than an hour and are done in our office and our dental practice will see dental emergency patients who need oral surgery. The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC believe that most patients should be placed on a dental antibiotic after any oral surgery to help avoid possible tooth extraction complications. Sometimes the infection is so bad that antibiotics have to be taken to reduce the inflamation and swelling before the procedure can be done. All patients are checked one week after their tooth extraction procedure and there is no additional fee for this post operative visit if the visit is solely to check the surgery site.
Having a preventative tooth extraction performed can possibly avoid unwanted tooth movement which can contribute to a malocclusion or unesthetic smile. It could also avoid a serious dental infection or tooth loss later in life. Having the procedure done early in life has many advantages including the fact that most kids are covered by their parents dental insurance while they are still dependents.
