Another form of trigeminal neuralgia is called Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia. It's called atypical because the pain is different than what is seen typically. It's atypical. Patients with this condition have constant pain that increases and decreases in intensity. In addition, the patient has an area of dull aching that often gets worse by touching a trigger zone.
Patients with Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia often undergo extensive dental examinations because their pain is felt in the teeth and jaws. If the origin of the pain is in the brain, these dental investigations will not reveal any dental problems even though the patient is feeling pain in the teeth and jaws.
Conversely, Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia can occur after trauma due to a surgical procedure or accident. Patients having tooth extraction can be affected. However, there are other disorders that can mimic it in the teeth and jaws.
