An avulsed tooth is a fancy term for a tooth that has been knocked out of its socket. This can be a disturbing accident but, if you know what to do, it can be possible to save the tooth. Putting the tooth back into the mouth is called tooth reimplantation and while there are several potential oral health problems that could arise it is still a much better idea than simply leaving the tooth out or getting dental restorations to replace the tooth.
An avulsed tooth is generally caused by a serious accident and the teeth most prone to such an accident are the teeth at the front of your mouth, the ones you see when smiling. Of course if it is a baby tooth that has been knocked out the situation is not as serious because it would fall out eventually but in some cases a dentist may feel it is better to reimplant the baby tooth. This is why it is important to know what to do in the case of such a dental emergency.
If you or your child has an avulsed tooth stay calm. First off, find the tooth. This can sometimes be difficult but be patient. When you find the tooth make sure not to pick it up by the roots, pick it up by the crown of the tooth, the part you normally see in your mouth. Rinse it quickly with water and put it in a container of milk then see a dentist immediately. After it is reimplanted you will want to keep regular check ups with your dentist because the tooth could become infected, develop and abscess or root resorption could occur.
