Baby Tooth Care

information from the  Atlanta Dental Group PC

baby tooth care

Baby tooth care should begin before the first baby tooth comes in. This may sound quite odd but there is more to oral hygiene than just tooth care. Proper gum care is essential too. In babies it is important to take proper care of their mouths. Serious oral health issues like baby bottle tooth decay can completely destroy a child's teeth. The problems is that oral health problems can create a domino effect in the mouth, causing other problems that can affect a person for a lifetime.

Baby tooth care can with cleaning a child's gums before the first tooth comes in. This can be done with a washcloth or a rubber thimble-like device. Do this to wipe off and food left in the mouth. Once the baby first tooth appears begins brushing it immediately. Use a specially formulated baby toothpaste and small baby toothbrush. This is important because a baby should not ingest that much fluoride. Do not leave a baby with a bottle at night. This can lead to baby bottle mouth (also known as baby bottle tooth decay or Early Childhood Cavities).

Baby tooth care can also be handled at a dental office. A baby should see a dentist when their first tooth comes in or by their first birthday. It is always a good idea to find an experienced family dentist who can provide child dental care. Parents should also teach their children that in the case of an accident in which a tooth is knocked out, the tooth can be saved. It is important not to pick up the tooth by the roots. Rinse the tooth and place it in a container of milk. Go to a dentist who can provide emergency dental care immediately.
