Bleeding Gums

bleeding gums

The most common cause of bleeding gums is gum disease. It's a gum infection that irritates the gums and causes inflamation, swelling and bleeding. Female hormonal changes can cause it, especially before menstruation. Hormone replacement or birth control pills have the same effect. The hormonal changes during pregnancy cause the gums to swell and this allows food to trap underneath the gums. This can cause tooth decay in addition to bleeding sore gums. Pregnancy and bleeding gums are connected.

Bleeding gums can be caused by vitamin and nutritional deficiencies. Vitamin C, Vitamin K, bioflavonoids, calcium, folic acid and niacin deficiencies contribute. Stress, smoking, heart medications, poor nutrition, steroids, anti-depressants, cancer therapy drugs, anti-epilepsy drugs and anti-coagulants worsen it. It can be difficult to sort out all of the possible causes so having a dentist is essential.

          Some diseases cause
bleeding gums. Diabetes can cause bleeding and gum disease. More serious medical problems are HIV, hemophilia, Addison's disease and acute leukemia. In these cases, a physician has to fully evaluate all possible causes. Fortunately, most cases are not serious and bleeding gums treatment is simple.

The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being. You are welcome to join our family of patients. Gums are a protective barrier and bleeding gums compromise natural protection making it important to find a bleeding gum remedy. Unfortunately, gum disease can cause blood clots, a heart attack or stroke. When a body is challenged by bacteria, it decreases the immune protection which can causes aggravation of medical conditions.
