Blood in the sink is never a good thing. Many people simply ignore it all together. Those people who tell their dentists about the problem will learn that it is not normal and that it is a symptom of oral health problems. Blood in the sink generally comes from problems with the gum tissue, a part of your mouth that is more important than you may realize.
Blood in the sink is one of the most easily recognizable symptoms of the early stages of gum disease. Gingivitis is the first and most mild stage of gum disease. Gingiva is the medical term for the gum tissue. There are multiple types of gingiva that all have different roles in the health of your mouth. Gum disease can destroy the gingiva and lead to serious oral health problems and many unpleasant symptoms.
Blood in the sink occurs when gingivitis causes swollen, red and bleeding gums. Harmful bacteria in your mouth collects and forms a film called plaque that clings to your teeth, releasing acids from the bacteria onto the teeth and onto the gums. If bacteria collects under the gums it can cause inflammation of the gums that causes the bleeding as well as other symptoms like bad breath.
Once you see blood in the sink you should see a dentist for treatment immediately. If you do not treat the disease it will only get worse and develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis can cause chronic bad breath, receding gums, gaps between the teeth, bone loss and eventually tooth loss. The infection causes the gums to recede and this causes bone loss. The bone acts as a foundation for the teeth and eventually, without enough supporting bone, the teeth fall out all together.
