bone grafting

Bone grafting in dentistry is used to replace bone in areas where bone loss has occured. This is often necessary for a dental implant procedure. Bone loss in the jaw can weaken the jaw and make it look as if the aging process has increased. To halt or reduce the progress of the bone loss, a dental implants can be used while also replacing a tooth. The problem with this option is that if extensive bone loss in the jaw has already occured, the dental implant cannot be placed. A procedure must then be done to replace the missing bone.

When bone grafting does become necessary there are several options as far as types of procedures. Sometimes bone can be gathered from the implant site and reused for grafting, however, this is not always possible. It is generally best to use the patients' own bone. Autogenous bone is collected from other parts of your body, most commonly from the patient's hip. The harvested bone from other parts of the body can be used and helps restore your oral health.

Another type of bone grafting procedure used in dentistry is called "bone in a bottle". This procedure uses specially prepared bone from a donor cadaver. While people may find this idea disquieting, it works remarkably well. In addition, the "Barrier Membrane Technique" can be used. This makes use of a special membrane to promote bone regrowth. These techniques can be used on there own, or in conjunction with each other, to help restore enough bone for your dental implant which will help keep your bone from dissolving. Fortunately, bone graft failure is low.
