Bone loss is a problem that can adversely and seriously affect your dental health. As bone is lost in the mandible occurs, the jaw becomes weaker and easier to break. Another problem associated with the loss of bone in the jaw is a seeming increase in the aging process. As the bone in the jaw deteriorates, it changes the face and can make a person look older. For many years this was accepted as part of aging process but advances in dental technology have allowed dentists to slow down or even reverse the loss of bone in the jaw.
Bone loss occurs with aging and with diseases like osteoporosis but it can also be directly related to the tooth loss. Once a tooth is gone the bone surrounding the socket that remains quickly deteriorates almost as if it is melting away. As the bone disappears the bone becomes weaker. If multiple teeth are missing the effect is amplified. Many people with dentures experience this problem.
One of the ways of preventing bone loss in the jaw is through dental implants. Once a tooth is missing it can be replaced. Dental implants are small devices made of titanum that are placed in the jaw and a crown is then connected to the implant. What is so amazing about this is that the titanium of the implant bonds with human bone and can do a great deal to stop bone loss in the jaw. Of course the implant cannot be placed unless there is adequate bone in place. If there is not, a bone grafting procedure can be used to replace some of the missing bone. Advances in pharmacology are also helping to keep bone loss in the jaw to a minimum.
