Proper care after tooth extraction is important to the healing process because tooth extraction is a serious procedure. If not properly cared for the socket could become infected. In less severe cases irritation and bleeding can occur. The healing process occurs in stages. It will generally take about a week for the initial part, gum tissue takes about 4 weeks to heal and complete healing, including the bone will take about 7 months. If not cared for properly this healing can take a great deal longer.
Care after tooth extraction surgery is most important for the first 48 hours. The socket will bleed for a few days and there will be some swelling. It is extremely important not to disturb the socket at this time Your dental surgeon will give you gauze to help the blood clot, which you will need to change frequently. Things like sneezing or drinking from a straw can exert a great deal of pressure on the mouth so it is best to avoid this by taking allergy medications before hand. While you are under the effects of local anesthesia it is important not to disturb this area, what you may not feel can cause problems later. DO NOT smoke while the socket is healing. Smoking could lead to a condition called dry socket, which can be extremely painful.
Keeping the socket clean is the most important part of care after tooth extraction. DO NOT USE mouthwash at this time. Your dentist may recommend gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water to help aid the formation of a clot. For about 4 days after the oral surgery, when you brush, do not use toothpaste and be careful not to disturb the socket. Your dentist will probably prescribe you pain medications and a dental antibiotic. It is important to follow his instructions in this. Try to avoid using aspirin, as it may prohibit the formation of a clot.
