The cause of gingivitis is food getting trapped underneath the gums. This food combines with the bacteria that live in the mouth to form a sort of yogurt called plaque. Dental plaque irritates the gum tissues so they swell and bleed. Unfortunately, inflamed gums are not usually painful so may patient do not seek professional help.
Many medical conditions can lower a patient's resistance and be the cause of gingivitis getting out of control. In a healthy person with a strong immune system, the body can usually control small amounts of dental plaque without the gums becoming inflamed. Some medical conditions that cause gingival problems are diabetes, leukemia, malnutrition, vitamin C deficiency (Scurvy) and niacin deficiency (Pellegra). The hormone changes in pregnancy and puberty can also cause swollen gum problems
Poor dental work such as overhanging fillings or crowns with open margins can also be the cause of gingivitis. Poorly fitting loose dentures and partials move and rub the gums red and raw. This often causes bleeding and pain. In some instance, large food items, such as a popcorn husk, can get caught underneath the gums and cause problems.
