The cause of jaw pain in ninety percent of these cases is from the jaw muscles that support and move the mandible, the name for the lower jaw. If a patient has a TMJ disorder, one or both of the jaw joints often becomes inflamed and painful. The supporting muscles attempt to hold the painful joint carefully in place without moving it into a painful position. However, this severely overworks these muscles. At first there is muscle splinting which then progresses on to muscle spasm as the tissue exceeds its ability to hold the joint in place. Finally, the muscles become painful and rock hard.
TMJ Pain can also be the cause of jaw pain.
TMJ disorder is unfortunately a very common problem. Many patients
do not know where their jaw pain
is coming from, they just know that they are suffering. If pressing
on the jaw joints causes pain, then it is a good chance that you
have a TMJ problem. In rare
instances, the pain source is a broken jaw, however, most patients
are aware of a recent accident and trauma. The cause should always
be determined.
In
some cases, the cause
of jaw pain is from referred pain that
comes from other areas surrounding the jaw. A heart attack can
be felt in the left arm and often in the lower jaw. This is a
very good reason to see a dentist or physician whenever you experience
this type of pain. Of course, any dental
pain should be investigated since early treatment is almost
always a good idea, especially if dental
infections are suspected.
Occasionally, the cause of jaw pain if from a dying or dead tooth. In this case, the tooth needs a root canal or a tooth extraction. Since root canal therapy has about a 97% success rate, investing in root canals is a wise idea. Keeping natural teeth is almost always cheaper and better than removing them.
