Cause of TMJ

cause of tmj

It would be really nice if there was just one cause of TMJ but there isn't. It can be secondary to another condition, such as a neck or back problem. It can be due to damage in the structure of the jaw joint or it can be from a bad bite that forces one or both of the jaw joints into a painful position. This makes it really difficult to manage and treat because treatment can often involve several different health care practicioners rather then just one.

With widely different signs and symptoms, the cause of TMJ can be difficult to sort out. Many patients are pain free and only have discomfort when they are stressed and/or overworked. Other patients are crippled with pain and can not function. Proper treatment eliminates each TMJ symptom in a step by step fashion until the patient feels better. Since most patients primarily complain of their muscle pain, eliminating muscle spasm and discomfort is often the first step to success in achieving TMJ relief.

A good thorough examination and history is essential to determine the cause of TMJ in an individual patient. Once determined, the treatment can be designed to address the causative issues for that patient. There is no magic bullet that cures all of the temporomandibular joint dysfunction problems, it takes patience and good cooperation between the patient and dentist.
