cavity

Pretty much everybody has heard of a cavity (dental caries) but few actually understand what it is or how one is formed. There are also a few misconceptions about cavities that should be remedied. Most importantly is the fact that cavities are not the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, periodontal disease (gum disease) is the leading cause. While dental caries can create tooth loss it does it differently than gum disease. Gum disease loosens the anchorage of the teeth by creating bone loss and a receding gum line, cavities target the teeth directly.

A cavity is basically a hole in a tooth caused by decay. This hole can continue to grow in size if left untreated. This hole is caused by the build -up of plaque in the mouth. This is a slimy yet sticky substance in the mouth caused by harmful bacteria growing in the mouth. This clings to the teeth and creates acids that eat away at the enamel of your teeth. If this problem is not treated soon enough it can reach the inside parts of your tooth and cause severe toothaches and could create the need for a root canal. Cavities could even cause a dead tooth, which, would need a tooth extraction. If caught in time all you will need is a cavity filling.

To avoid getting a cavity it is best to keep good oral hygiene habits. This will prevent plaque from forming in your mouth. It is also a very good idea to visit the dentist at least twice a year, even if you are not experiencing problems. Very often the dentist will be able to see a problem with an x-ray that you are not yet experiencing the effects of. It will also mean that you can get a thorough cleaning from the hygienist who will also be able to tell you where you are having problems cleaning.
