cavity in baby tooth

A cavity is never a good thing. Many people think that a cavity in baby tooth is not that big a problem because a baby tooth is meant to fall out eventually. What people do not realize is that those baby teeth play several important roles. If a baby tooth is lost too early it can actually create a number of problems within the mouth. And if the child is still a baby a cavity can be a sign of a very serious oral health problem that could destroy a healthy set of teeth. As a parent it is always important to keep a close watch on your child's oral health, so as to prevent such problems.

A cavity in baby tooth of a baby is a warning sign for a problem called Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. This is also known as Early Childhood Cavities or Baby Bottle Mouth. But the phrase "baby bottle" can be a bit misleading because the problem is not just caused by baby bottles. It is caused by breast milk and sugars in liquids that the child drinks. If the child is left sleeping with a bottle or if the mouth is not cleaned after nursing the sugars can attack the teeth in the mouth. The problem is that the mouth is more susceptible to such attacks at night. Baby bottle mouth can be so bad that the necessary dental treatment has to be done at a hospital under general anesthesia.

Baby tooth care is important at any age but if the child is older a cavity in baby tooth is not generally a big problem. The important thing is that a child learn the correct oral hygiene habits. This includes brushing 3 times a day and flossing twice. A baby tooth acts as a place-marker for the adult teeth before tooth eruption has occurred. If the baby tooth is lost too early it can actually create orthodontic problems. This often needs to be fixed with braces and no child wants braces. It is always best to prevent problems rather than to fix them so teach you child proper oral hygiene from a young age so that it stick for life and bring your child to the dentist regularly so that your dentist can spot growing problems.
