Child dental health month is during February. While it may be the shortest month, you can still obtain a great deal of information about how to care for your child and more importantly, your child can learn to care from him or herself. When the child is not able to care for themselves it is important for the parents to take good care of their oral hygiene but as soon as the child can keep such habits it is best if they do so and do so with knowledge and understanding.

       While child dental health month has only been around since 1981, it's roots go further back. The first celebration of child dental care was in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3, 1941. That same year February 3-7 became Children's Dental Health Week in Akron, Ohio. The first national celebration wasn't until the American Dental Association (ADA for short) the first Children's Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. In 1955 it was extended to a week and then a month in 1981.

       Child dental health month is meant to help children learn about their mouths, teeth, and dental care. They learn how to care for their teeth and what problems could occur if they don't do so. Teaching a child proper oral hygiene habits is one the key factors of this month. This is often done through crafts projects and visits from local dentists. There are even essay contests about dental health for children grades K-5.
