Cleaning Dentures

cleaning dentures

Cleaning dentures on a regular basis is just as important as brushing and flossing natural teeth. Every patient should at least remove his or her dentures every night and clean them. Of course, dentures should be handled with great care to avoid damaging them by accidental dropping. Stand over a full sink of water or place a towel over the counter to cushion the fall if they do slip out of your hands. Regardless of how clean you keep them, dentures should be replaced every five years to restore the lost plastic that was worn away over this time. When a patient fails to do this, the face collapses.

After removing them the next step in cleaning dentures is gently brushing the plates using a soft bristled brush. Be very careful to avoid damaging them. It's a good thing not to use toothpaste on dentures since toothpastes are too abrasive for the soft plastic. Most dentists recommend an over-the-counter cleansing agent but hand soap is okay. You should remove your dentures and rinse them after every meal. This helps prevent food from fermenting and soaking into your plates and staining them.

While cleaning dentures it's important to keep them moist. Never keep them lying around on the sink or counter tops since this can dry the denture our and warp it. Use room temperature water or a cleansing solution at room temperature. If you have partial dentures, don't forget to brush and floss your natural teeth since your natural teeth are always better than the artificial ones. Partials should not be placed in cleaning solutions since this can cause the metal clasps to tarnish. Ultrasonic cleaning machines use sound to create small shock waves in water. They can clean dentures but should only be used weekly to avoid damage.
