Cosmetic bonding is the dental procedure that started Cosmetic Dentistry. In this procedure the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and etched with phosphoric acid. The acid is washed off of the tooth surface leaving millions of microscopic pores on the tooth surface. A liquid plastic is flowed into the pores and hardened creating a surface that adheres to the tooth and is used as a base for white filling material. Tooth colored material is then layered and shaped to change the appearance of the underlying tooth. After a high polish is applied, the final restoration looks much like a natural tooth.
Cosmetic bonding can be used to cover an ugly tooth or close an unattractive tooth gap between teeth. It can repair a broken tooth or lengthen a short tooth and in extreme cases, this technique can be used to cover the entire tooth creating a composite crown made completely of white composite filling material. Unlike porcelain veneers, this procedure is quick and immediate. It can also be used to bond in routine white fillings instead of using mercury amalgam.
Cosmetic bonding is a one appointment procedure and is often done without anaesthesia. It is less expensive then many other cosmetic dental care procedures such as porcelain laminates. However, the material in white fillings can stain and crack over time which usually does not happen with porcelain laminates. A touch up or replacement may be necessary in three to five years, however, good oral home care can often extend the life of these restorations.
