crown of gold

Advantages

If you look into the mouth of an older dentist, you will often find a crown of gold. Gold is a wonderful dental material. Because of gold's wonderful properties, it wears over time and allows the gold crown to gradually fit into the mouth. Porcelain crowns do not wear and break with continued biting forces whereas a crown of gold does not break.

Gold is hypo-allergenic. It is extremely unusual for gold to cause an allergic reaction. When a crown of gold is highly polished, the gums often grown up onto its surface.

Porcelain crowns require a great deal of time and expertise to make. When a porcelain crown has a supporting metal understructure, two dental technicians are usually needed to make the one porcelain crown. A crown of gold is often quickly constructed by one dental technician rather than two. This decreases the labor costs to make a gold crown and often compensates for the increased material costs.

Statistically, a crown of gold lasts (14 years) almost twice as long as a porcelain crown (7 years). This makes a crown of gold a good long term investment.

A highly polished metal is beautiful and gold crowns have been cherished by humans since ancient times. It has only been recently with the quest for eternal youth that a crown of gold has fallen out of favor.

Disadvantages

A crown of gold absorbs hot and cold, much like a pot or pan taken from the stove or refrigerator. It is not unusual for a tooth underneath to be sensitive for a few months before the tooth adapts to the temperature changes in the crown of gold.

When a tooth has a root canal, there is no longer any thermal sensation in that tooth. A root canal tooth also becomes very brittle and can break. A crown of gold is ideal for a root canal tooth because a root canal tooth avoids the main disadvantage.

Gold has gold color and many patients consider this a disadvantage of a crown of gold.
