Dental composite is the white filling material that most dentists are using today. It is actually a resin polymer. The material comes in many different shades to match the different colors of teeth. Today these new material can be used on front and back teeth and pretty much replace the old amalgam fillings. White fillings can also be molded and shaped to insure an excellent appearance before the restoration is hardened. This is really nice.
There are also several different types of dental composite. Microfils are very translucent and soft. They are often used over the top of tooth bonding to give a natural translucent surface. Hybrids are more stiff and hold their shape once the cosmetic dentist has molded the restoration into the desired shape. Hybrids are almost much stronger than a microfils and can better withstand the forces of chewing.
Several dental composite tints are available to recreate the natural white and dark spots that sometimes can be seen in teeth. Finishing the material to a high polish is very important. This not only helps create a natural looking surface but a highly polished composite also better resists staining. Many different polishing techniques are available including rotary disks, polishing strips along with high and low speed polishing points.
As Cosmetic Dentistry is undergoing a revolution, so is dental composite. New techniques and material allow a layering of different white filling materials to create a more lifelike appearance. Translucent materials are now available to give a more natural look to the edges of teeth and tints are available for mimic small natural looking variations inside teeth.
