dental crown care

Dental crown care is important. Having an expensive restoration like this replaced can be financially devastating. Although the crown can't decay, the tooth underneath it can. Tooth decay will result in having to replace the restoration or worse, the need for a root canal. It's worth taking some time every day to properly tend to your body.

Brushing two to three times a day is an essential part of good dental crown care. The important part of the restoration that must be cleaned is the area where the restoration meets the natural tooth; it's called the margin. Removing food which feeds bacteria from the mouth reduces the chance of subsequent tooth decay and crown loss. This requires careful light brushing on the gums surrounding the bottom of the restoration.

Another important ingredient in excellent dental crown care is daily flossing. Flossing removes food from between the teeth where a toothbrush can't reach. It's especially helpful in preventing or controlling gum disease. As gum disease develops around a dental restoration, the margins become exposed and at risk of bacterial attack.

Because dental restorations are expensive, patients should also consider the using a prescription fluoride rinse, like PerioMed, as part of their daily dental crown care. This gel is applied to the teeth just before going to bed and after regular brushing. The fluoride kills the bacteria that cause gum disease and can also help reduce sensitivity. It also coats the exposed natural tooth with fluoride which impregnates the surface of the tooth and provides 24 hour protection against tooth decay.
