A dental crown preparation prepares a natural tooth for a laboratory made dental crown to go on it. The process takes about an hour from numbing to temporization. At first the dentist puts the tooth receiving the crown to sleep using a dental anaesthetic.
The actual dental crown preparation is done using a high speed dental drill and diamond burs. The bur turns approximately 300 to 500 thousand turns per minute. That's fast! The top of the tooth is removed about 1.5 millimeters to make room for the porcelain and metal materials to go on it. The sides of the tooth are then removed so that they are parallel to each other. Finally, the front and back of the tooth are reduced and the margins of the cut areas around the tooth are connected.
An impression is taken of the dental crown preparation and an acrylic temporary is made to protect the tooth while the final restoration is being made. It normally takes about two weeks for the laboratory to construct the restoration. At the delivery appointment, the dentist adjusts the final crown and modifies it to specifically fit into the patient's mouth. After glazing and polishing, the restoration is permanently cemented onto the tooth.
