Fortunately, most people have very few dental crown problems but when they do occur, they can be very aggravating. The most common difficulty is fracture of the outer porcelain coating on porcelain crowns. Many dentists choose to under-prepare teeth in an attempt to conserve tooth structure. However, this leaves a thinner space available for the materials. Porcelain is not strong when it's thin, it breaks easily. In most cases, porcelain fracture does not endanger the tooth underneath the restoration.
Conversely, other dental crown problems result when dentists over prepare a tooth. Ideally, the form of the tooth preparation should include parallel walls that naturally prevent the restoration from moving. In an attempt to create a beautiful restoration, some dentists cut away too much tooth in order to make more room for porcelain. Additional space allows the laboratory technician to create a more life like restoration.
Occasionally, some patients have dental crown problems related to sensitivity to hot and cold. Remember, when a tooth is prepared, about one to two millimeters of more of its surface is removed. Teeth are living and this is pretty traumatic. It is amazing how most teeth do well despite having their outer skins ripped off. Unfortunately, in some cases, a tooth can die from the procedure and require a root canal.
