Dental Crown Work

dental crown work

Dental crown work is probably the nicest and prettiest type of restoration that dentists do. A dental crown is a cover over the top of a prepared tooth and literally replaces the tooth enamel and some dentin. The goal is to make an artificial tooth that looks and functions like a real tooth. These restorations are constructed when there is a significant amount of tooth loss or when a tooth is already composed of a great many of fillings.

There are several different types of dental crown work. A full gold crown is usually made for back teeth that can not be seen whereas an all porcelain dental crown is used in the front where it can easily be seen in the smile. The most common restoration is a porcelain fused to metal crown. It uses feldspathic porcelain over a special metal designed to bond to the porcelain.

Although dental crown work is beautiful, it's also the most expensive procedure done in Dentistry. A great deal of university and commercial research has been done developing new porcelains that look more like natural enamel and which are strong. These materials are improving every year and it may be that in the future an all porcelain dental crown will replace the porcelain fused to metal restoration so popular now.
