The dental implant procedure is a step by step process used to place dental implants. After excellent anaesthesia, an incision is made in the area of the missing tooth and the gum tissues are gently teased away from the bone. The implant dentist then uses a series of precise drills, each larger than the next, to create a precise hole in the bone that exactly matches the shape and size of the dental implant to be used. The hole created in the bone is called an osteotomy.

          At the end of the dental implant procedure, when the final shape and size has been achieved, the implant is slowly screwed into the osteotomy and the gum tissues are sutured back together. The bone surrounding the implant is alive and if left alone, will usually grow onto the surface of the implant. The implant is left undisturbed for four to six months environment for the bone to grow onto the titanium metal surface. Submerging the dental implant underneath the bone for a period of time helps decrease the stresses on the implant and helps decrease the chances of dental implant complications.

          Dental implant procedure is usually performed in the dental office under local anaesthesia. The dental implant surgery takes about a hour for a single implant and about an additional twenty minutes to a half hour for each additional implant. Since there are no nerves for bone to feel, the process is generally very comfortable and many patients listen to their favorite MP3s during the procedure. A narcotic analgesic and dental antibiotic are usually prescribed to help during the initial dental implant recuperation period.
