dental implant risk

The dental implant risk today is much different than years ago. Implant Dentistry has dramatically changed and in now considered part of normal mainstream Dentistry. This was not the case two decades ago. An implant dentist used to be considered a quack by established dentists but things have dramatically changed. There have been many advances.

Today, the dental implant risk has been reduced because the implant materials are biocompatible based on extensive scientific studies in this area. An alloy is mixture of different metals. Most dental implants are made of a titanium alloy which human bone loves. In fact, bone sticks so firmly to a titanium dental implant that it has to be cut out of the bone to be removed. Dental implant surgery follows the same overall quidelines as traditional medical surgery in order to avoid dental infections and improve tissue healing. The surgery often takes less than a few hours.

Part of the dental implant risk is based on the knowledge and experience of the implant dentist doing the surgery and the dental work attached to the implants. The placement and restoration of dental implants should be carefully planned and based on each patient's particular situation. More time spent on planning helps reduce future problems. Adequate x-rays, and possibly a CAT scan, should be done to determine the amount and shape of existing bone and diagnostic tooth set ups are very helpful in determining the best location of each dental implant. Whenever possible, the patient should be involved in the planning process because the patient will be the final owner of his or her dental work.
