dental implant surgery

The aim of dental implant surgery is to successfully place a dental implant that will harmoniously integrate with the surrounding jaw bone and gums. During the dental implant procedure an incision is made in the area missing the tooth and the gum tissues are gently reflected from the bone. The implant dentist then carefully drills a precise hole in the jaw bone that exactly matches the shape and size of the implant. The hole in the bone is called an osteotomy. The osteotomy guides the implant into the correct position, depth and angulationas as the dental implant is screwed into the bone. Much of the thought process before surgery is planning the locations and nature of each osteotomy.

At the conclusion of the dental implant surgery, the gum tissues are sutured back together. Traditionally, the submerged implant is left for six months before any biting forces are placed upon it. This allows for a sterile undisturbed environment for the bone to grow onto the titanium metal surface. The metal of choice is titanium since titanium has been shown to be very biocompatible and bone grows onto it. Many dentists are choosing to immediately place the post and dental implant crown on the freshly placed implant. Our office chooses to wait since there is a higher rate of success with this method and avoiding dental implant failure is a major goal at our office.

Dental implant surgery is usually performed in our dental implant center under local anaesthesia. The surgery is actually much easier than an impacted wisdom tooth removal. The whole process takes about a hour for a single implant and because there are no nerves for bone to feel, the procedure generally involves very little discomfort. Most patients are very comfortable and usually listen to one of their favorite CDs or MP3s during the procedure.

In addition to the dental implant surgery, Atlanta Implant Dentist, Dr. Mark Allan Padolsky is also able to design, create, and place the dental implant crown and/or dental implant bridge work that goes on top. This allows for one dentist to be in control of both phases of the implant reconstruction and simplifies the decision making process. Patients can enjoy going to one office for their care. The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being. You are welcome to join our family of patients.
