A dental partial is a partial denture, meant to replace only a few missing teeth, rather than a full arch. It is possible to get removable partial dentures or fixed partial dentures. Most partials are removable, just like normal dentures. They are generally made using a metal framework, but flexible partial dentures are made without the metal. If you are missing only one tooth alternatives include dental implants or dental bridges. After tooth has been removed the rest of the teeth can shift out of place, which, can create serious problems, it is best to have something done as soon as possible.
Most removable dental partial dentures are made using a metal framework that attaches to the teeth, only after a dentist modifies the teeth. A flexible framework partial like a Valplast partial does not use metal, but a gum colored acrylic that blends in with the natural color of your gums almost perfectly. The Valplast material is extremely difficult to break, so the dentures can be made quite thin, and therefore more comfortable. The acrylic forms the base of the denture as well as the clasps that keep it secure within the mouth.
Fixed partial dentures is less a dental partial and more like a dental bridge or an implant supported bridge. An implant supported denture partial uses a few implants to support more teeth. Once the implants are installed, crowns are placed on the implants with false crowns separating them. This allows for very strong and secure partials that look real and can last a lifetime.
