dental restorations

Dental restorations are an important and often overlooked part of dentistry. Simply put, the term restoration applies to any artificial structure that is used to replace part of a tooth, or the whole tooth. These restorations can be cosmetic as well as functional. The dental filling is the most commonly used type of restoration but other types include inlays, crowns, dental bridges, dentures, and dental implants.

Different types of dental restorations are used for different types of things. Dental fillings and inlays are used to replace areas of a tooth lost to dental decay but they work differently. Fillings are created directly on the tooth, while inlays are created and then placed on the tooth. Both can be done using white material that makes it virtually impossible to tell anything has been done to the tooth.

Larger dental restorations are used to replace a missing tooth or even several missing teeth. They are more expensive because more work is required in order to fix the problem. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by creating a false crown, attached to two other crowns, that go on the teeth surrounding the missing tooth. Dentures are a simple set of false teeth that can attach into the mouth in a number of different ways depending on the type of denture. Implants are the best solution for replacing missing teeth, but they are expensive and not everyone is a candidate for the procedure.

Many people need dental restorations because of an unavoidable accident but in many cases proper oral hygiene on the patients part could have prevented the necessity for such work to be done.  If you would like more information on your dental work options please consider visiting the Atlanta Dental Group PC.
